Weekend notebook: titles and wins for Ferrari from Mugello to Suzuka
Maranello 15 September 2025
Victories and titles arrived for the Prancing Horse cars in a busy weekend of racing from Europe to Japan. Ferrari dominated the Japan Cup at Suzuka with twin 1-2-3 finishes and a double title in the Pro-Am and Am classes. The Japanese circuit also brought a fourth place in the Summer Endurance Race, valid for the Intercontinental GT Challenge. At Mugello, the Italian GT Endurance Championship concluded with Ferrari titles in the GT3 Pro-Am and Am classes and in GT Cup.
With one round to go, Ferrari remain in contention for the title in the European Le Mans Series thanks to victory at Silverstone, where further successes also came in the Le Mans Cup. Positive results too in the DTM, with podium finishes, and in the ADAC GT Masters at Spielberg, while Frikadelli Racing returned to the track in the NLS on the Nordschleife.
Intercontinental GT Challenge. Fourth place in the Pro-Am class was the best result among the five Ferraris competing in the Japanese Summer Endurance Race, which this year was part of the Intercontinental GT Challenge with the 1000 kilometres of Suzuka. Taking the place on the podium, though adrift in the overall standings, was the number 60 296 GT3 of LM Corsa with Japanese drivers Kei Nakanishi and Shigekazu Wakisaka alongside former Formula 1 driver Giancarlo Fisichella, Ferrari Ambassador Driver. Less fortunate was the number 45 of Ponos Racing with Yorikatsu Tsujiko, Kei Cozzolino and Yusuke Yamasaki.
Among the three Maranello cars in the Bronze class, eighth place went to the number 21 of Harmony Racing with Dustin Blattner, Dennis Marschall and Lorenzo Patrese, while the number 98 of K-tunes Racing with Daisuke Yamawaki, Shinichi Takagi and Sean Walkinshaw, and the number 555 of Maezawa Racing, with Ferrari official driver Thomas Neubauer joined by Naoki Yokomizo and Yusaku Maezawa, finished tenth and eleventh respectively.
The next race on the 2025 Intercontinental GT Challenge calendar is the 8 Hours of Indianapolis, scheduled from 16 to 18 October on the US circuit.
ELMS. After an intense battle and a race neutralised several times by the entry of the Safety Car following contacts, and eventually halted for heavy rain 10 minutes from the finish, Ferrari secured a remarkable double-win in the GT3 class of the 4 Hours of Silverstone.
On the fast British circuit, the win – the second of the season – went to the number 50 296 LMGT3 of Richard Mille AF Corse entrusted to Prancing Horse official driver Lilou Wadoux with Riccardo Agostini and Custodio Toledo. After a race consistently in the leading positions, with 10 minutes to go the number 50 was overtaken by the Ferrari number 86 of GR Racing, but the stoppage due to rain validated the standings on the previous lap. With this success, Richard Mille AF Corse leaves England leading the standings, 12 points clear of the closest pursuers, with just one round to go in the championship.
Tom Fleming and Michael Wainwright, together with Italian Riccardo Pera, who produced a stunning recovery at the end, therefore had to settle for second place. Just off the podium in fourth was the number 57 of Kessel Racing with Brazilian Ferrari official driver Daniel Serra, alongside Takeshi Kimura and Ben Tuck, who nevertheless moved up to fifth in the overall standings, 19 points behind the leader.
The sister car of the Swiss team, number 74, featuring official driver Miguel Molina with Andrew Gilbert and Fran Rueda, finished seventh ahead of two more 296 LMGT3s. Eighth were Duncan Cameron, David Perel and Matthew Griffin in the number 55 Spirit of Race car, while ninth went to the number 66 of JMW Motorsport with Americans Scott Noble and Jason Hart alongside Gianmaria Bruni.
Outside the top ten finished the number 51 of AF Corse courtesy of official driver Davide Rigon with Charles-Henry Samani and Conrad Laursen, in eleventh.
The final round of the championship, which will award the GT3 class title, is scheduled at the Portimão circuit in the Algarve on 18 October.
Le Mans Cup. A double podium for Ferrari also in the GT3 class of the Le Mans Cup at Silverstone, with four 296 GT3s in the top five places of the race. Taking the runner-up spot was the number 51 of AF Corse, forced to start from the back of the grid after an intervention on the car following qualifying. A great comeback by Eliseo Donno brought it back to the lead, but a collision suffered by teammate Alessandro Cozzi, which resulted in a spin, forced the two Italians to settle for second. In third came the number 23 296 GT3 of the Spanish team Biogas Motorsport with Josep Mayola Comedira alongside Marc Carol Ibarra, while just off the podium was the Ferrari number 17 of Kessel Racing with Lorenzo Innocenti and Andrea Belicchi in fourth, ahead of the number 33 of Kessel Racing with Murat Ruhi Çuhadaroglu and his Italian teammate David Cleto Fumanelli.
With one race to go, scheduled at Portimão on 18 October, Donno and Cozzi lead the standings with 86 points, ahead of Fumanelli and Çuhadaroglu on 70, and Innocenti and Belicchi on 67.
Japan Cup. An extraordinary pair of Ferrari 1-2-3 finishes in the final round of the Japan Cup, held in conjunction with the 1000 kilometres of Suzuka, the third round of the Intercontinental GT Challenge.
In the first of the two weekend races, victory on the top step of the podium went to the number 18 296 GT3 of TODA Racing with AKITA and Takashi Kobayashi, ahead of the number 45 of Ponos Racing with Kei Cozzolino and Yorikatsu Tsujiko. Completing the Ferrari clean sweep was the number 296 of Hitotsuyama with Cornes Racing with Akihiro Tsuzuki and Shintaro Kawabata, while the number 555 of Maezawa Racing with Yusaku Maezawa and Naoki Yokomizo finished sixth.
The same three cars from Saturday filled the top three positions again in the second race, with victory going to Cozzolino and Tsujiko ahead of Tsuzuki and Kawabata, while Akita and Kobayashi concluded in third. Fourth in Race-2 was the number 181 of Norik Racing with Norikazu Shibata and Taku Bamba, who had finished ninth in Race-1 behind the number 9 of Bingo Racing with LM Corsa, entrusted to Shinji Takei and Ukyo Sasahara (18th in Race-2).
Ferrari also celebrated success in the GT3 Am class thanks to a one-two by the number 1 of Team Macchina, driven by Tadao Uematsu and Hirokazu Suzuki, who had already clinched the class championship at the Okayama event. In the same class, the number 66 Ferrari 488 GT3 Evo of CarGuy with Takashi Toyoda and Kazuki Ota twice finished in third place.
With the weekend’s results, Akihiro Tsuzuki and Shintaro Kawabata with the 296 GT3 of Hitotsuyama with Cornes Racing were crowned Pro-Am class champions ahead of Shinji Takei and Ukyo Sasahara with the Ferrari of Bingo Racing with LM Corsa.
CIGT Endurance. The final act of the Endurance series, contested at the Mugello Circuit in Tuscany, awarded three titles to Ferrari. In the GT3 class, Leonardo Colavita, Ibrahim Badawi and David Vidales won the Pro-Am standings with the number 62 296 GT3 of AF Corse, while Jason Ambrose, David McDonald and Francesco Castellacci won both the race and the Am class title with the number 83, also under the AF Corse banner. In the GT Cup, celebrating in the 1st Division Pro-Am class were Stefano Gai and Fabrizio Fontana with the number 169 296 Challenge, again fielded by AF Corse.
The three-hour race on Tuscan soil, halted for an hour to repair a manhole cover on the track, saw Colavita, Badawi and Vidales climb the third step of the GT3 podium, and by confirming their second place in the final overall standings, secure the Pro-Am title ahead of their Ferrari teammates Ferrari-Raghunathan-Ponzio, who finished just off the podium with the number 51.
In the Am class, in addition to the win by Jason Ambrose, David McDonald and Francesco Castellacci, there was fourth place for the number 74 of Stefano Marazzi and Samuele Buttarelli of Rossocorsa, and fifth for the number 93 entrusted to Oscar Ryndziewicz and Giacomo Altoè. The number 50 of AF Corse, with Edoardo Borelli and Christoph Ulrich alongside Simon Mann for the occasion, failed to complete even a lap.
The last Ferrari in the race, the number 3 of Pellin Racing entered in the Pro class, finished fourth in class with Paolo Ruberti and Terje Haugen at the wheel.
In the GT Cup, the single-marque series, the 1st Division Pro-Am title went to Stefano Gai and Fabrizio Fontana with the number 169 296 Challenge of AF Corse. The pair finished the race in second place behind Andreas Bogh-Sorensen and Mikkel Mac in the number 107 of AF Corse, who were crowned vice-champions. Edoardo Barbolini, Lorenzo Megna and Vincenzo Scarpetta in the number 151, again of AF Corse, went out in the early stages without being able to fight for victory, as did Sabatino Di Mare, Filippo Croccolino and Pio Agoglia with the number 111 296 Challenge of Best Lap.
It was a Ferrari treble in the Am class, but none of the three crews managed to close the gap at the top of the standings. The day’s win went to Christian Potolicchio and Angelo Fontana in the number 280 of Rossocorsa, ahead of the number 282 of AF Corse with Willem van der Vorm and Michele Rugolo, and the number 219 of Best Lap with Andrea Levy and Ivan David Mari.
In the 2nd Division Pro-Am class, second place for Lorenzo Bontempelli, Diego Di Fabio and Vito Postiglione in the number 403 488 Challenge of Easy Race was not enough to compete for the title, while in the Am class the number 577 488 Challenge of Double TT Racing with Matteo Merulla, Gianmarco Ercoli and Nicholas Risitano finished fifth, thus seeing their title hopes vanish.
DTM. A bittersweet weekend at Spielberg for Emil Frey Racing, who saw victory slip away in Race-1 for Jack Aitken in the number 14 296 GT3 after exiting the track just metres from the chequered flag while leading. The American, only 20th in Race-2, dropped to fifth in the overall standings, 21 points behind the leader with one race to go in the season.
The Prancing Horse cars’ satisfactions in Styria instead bore the name of Thierry Vermeulen in the Swiss team’s number 69. The Dutchman, after taking third place in Race-1, fought for victory throughout the second race of the weekend, eventually finishing runner-up, less than two seconds from the winner.
For the third Emil Frey Racing driver, finally, there was an excellent fourth place in the opening race, but he failed to finish Race-2.
The last round of the German series, which will award the titles, is scheduled at the Hockenheimring from 3 to 5 October.
ADAC GT Masters. From Spielberg came an eighth and a seventh place overall for the number 66 296 GT3 of Baron Motorsport, which earned a second and a first place in the Pro-Am class. At the wheel of the Austrian team’s car were the experienced local driver Ernst Kirchmayr and Italian Fabrizio Crestani, who had already taken part in last year’s round of the championship at the Styrian circuit.
NLS. The return of the number 21 Ferrari 296 GT3 of Frikadelli Racing to the Nordschleife after a year’s absence ended with a third place in the SP9 Am class. At the wheel was team manager and driver Klaus Abbelen, who contested the second of the two races on the weekend, namely the 64th ADAC Reinoldus Endurance Race. The team had completed 11 laps in the first of the two races as a test for the following day.
