Weekend notebook: wins and podiums across Europe and United States

The Ferrari 296 GT3 of official driver Alessio Rovera and Vincent Abril claimed the runners-up spot from pole and a fourth place in the GT World Challenge Europe – Sprint Cup at Misano. Victories also came in the Bronze Cup (with Kessel Racing) and the Gold Cup (with Emil Frey Racing). In the International GT Open at Paul Ricard, AF Corse secured an overall win in Race-2 and a one-two in the Am class. The AF Corse USA Ferrari claimed victory and second place in the Am class at VIR in the GT World Challenge America.

GT World Challenge Europe. In the third round of the Sprint Cup, contested at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, the number 51 AF Corse – Francorchamps Motors Ferrari 296 GT3 of Vincent Abril and official driver Alessio Rovera finished second in Race-1 and fourth in Race-2. After securing pole in the opening qualifying session, Rovera and Abril stayed in front for most of Race-1 before eventually losing the lead with just seven minutes to go, having fought hard to defend it. They also performed well in Race-2, consistently among the front-runners and ultimately finishing just off the podium.

The team’s second car, the number 50 AF Corse – Francorchamps Motors entry of official drivers Arthur Leclerc and Thomas Neubauer, retired from Race-1 after being caught up in early collisions that sidelined several cars. In Race-2, they finished in 24th place.

The number 14 Ferrari 296 GT3 of Emil Frey Racing, crewed by Ben Green and Konsta Lappalainen, finished eighth and 15th at the Romagna circuit.

In the Silver Cup, the number 52 AF Corse – Francorchamps Motors entry of Jef Machiels and Marcos Siebert recorded fifth- and fourth-place finishes.

In the Bronze Cup, the number 74 Kessel Racing Ferrari of Dustin Blattner and Dennis Marschall secured two pole positions, including the second-fastest time overall, and won Race-1. They were knocked out of contention in Race-2 after a penalty for a contact at the start. Blattner and Marschall remain at the top of the standings. In the same class, Eddie Cheever and Marco Pulcini crossed the line seventh and sixth in the number 93 Ziggo Sport Tempesta Ferrari 296 GT3.

In the Gold Cup, victory in Race-2 went to the number 69 Emil Frey Racing Ferrari driven by Chris Lulham and Thierry Vermeulen, who bounced back after retiring from Race-1 following a contact.

The next round of the GT World Challenge Europe Sprint Cup takes place in two weeks at Magny-Cours in France.

GT World Challenge America. At the VIR track, the fourth round of the season featured a win and a second place in the Am class for the number 163 AF Corse USA Ferrari 296 GT3 of Oswaldo Negri and Jay Schreibman. Teammates Christian and Marcelo Hahn, in the number 16 car, finished in ninth place in the Pro Am class in Race-1 after an early spell at the front, then improved to sixth in Race-2. The next event is at Barber Motorsports Park from 5 to 7 September.

International GT Open. The Ferrari contingent enjoyed a strong weekend at Paul Ricard, where the fifth round of the season delivered a first win of the year in Race-2 for Tommaso Mosca and Carl Bennett in the number 51 AF Corse Ferrari 296 GT3. The Italian-American crew triumphed in a race they started from pole position, remaining among the front-runners throughout. Their weekend also included a third-place finish in Race-1. The number 21 AF Corse Ferrari 296 GT3 of Gino Forgione and Michele Rugolo secured a one-two finish in the Am class, extending their lead at the top of the standings to 88 points. In the same class, the number 5 Olimp Racing Ferrari of Polish pairing Stanislaw Jedliński and Krystian Korzeniowski finished in sixth and fourth place.

In the Pro class, the number 17 Elite Motorsport with Entire Race Engineering Ferrari of Tom Lebbon and Tom Emson took fifth- and fourth-place finishes.

The next round of the International GT Open is set for 7 September at Spielberg.
