Weekend notebook: title slips away in DTM
Maranello 06 October 2025
Emil Frey Racing’s title hopes with the Ferrari 296 GT3 slipped away only in Race-2 of the DTM season finale at Hockenheim. The British GT Championship also came to a close, with the Spirit of Race Ferrari 296 GT3 finishing seventh at Donington Park.
DTM. The season finale weekend at Hockenheim started promisingly for the number 14 Ferrari 296 GT3 of Emil Frey Racing. Jack Aitken, still competing for the title, posted the second-fastest qualifying time, just behind teammate Ben Green, who took pole position. The two Emil Frey Racing drivers went on the attack in Race-1, but an error by Green at Turn 5 handed the lead to Aitken, who kept it until the mandatory pit stop. Aitken was unable to reclaim the lead and finished sixth, but remained in contention for the title going into Sunday’s race. The number 10 Ferrari 296 GT3 of Ben Green finished tenth, while Emil Frey Racing’s third entry, the number 69 car driven by Thierry Vermeulen, was nineteenth over the line.
In Race-2, Green started from third but was hit from behind and collided with another car, forcing him to retire early. Aitken, who lined up fourth on the grid, spent much of the race in third place. With five minutes remaining, the Safety Car came out to allow the removal of a car stopped in a dangerous area. During this phase, the stewards awarded Aitken three Long Lap Penalties for overtaking under yellow flags, effectively ending his title challenge. The British driver did not have enough time to serve the penalties and was subsequently disqualified, finishing the season eighth in the overall standings. Vermeulen’s Ferrari crossed the line in twelfth place. Emil Frey Racing ended the season fourth in the teams’ standings.
British GT Championship. In the final round of the season at Donington Park, the number 55 Ferrari 296 GT3 of Spirit of Race finished seventh. Despite missing several rounds during the year, Duncan Cameron and Matt Griffin concluded the championship in thirteenth place overall.
